Heads of key United Nations agencies had commended the Government and other stakeholders on measures taken to contain COVID-19 in Sri Lanka during a meeting yesterday, the Prime Minister’s Office said in a statement.
A special meeting of the Special Presidential Task Force on Essential Services was held yesterday at Temple Trees with the participation of Health Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and Task Force Head Basil Rajapaksa.
The heads of the UN agencies operating in Sri Lanka were also present at this meeting.
The UN delegation led by UN Resident Coordinator in Sri Lanka Hanaa Singer consisted of representatives from UNODC, UNFAO, UNICEF, UNFPA, WHO, UNOPS, UNDP, WFP, IOM, ILO and UNHCR.
These representatives commended the Government of Sri Lanka for the progress made by the health authorities in controlling the coronavirus outbreak and the provision of essential services at this difficult time. The group also agreed to assist the Government for future activities in the medical, child protection, labour law, food, legal, economic and educational sectors.
