The United National Party (UNP) yesterday called for explanations from members who have submitted nominations from other parties and warned the Working Committee will take appropriate action at its next meeting.

“Acting in line with Article 3.4(h) of the Party Constitution, letters have been sent out to all Members who had placed their names on the nomination lists of other political parties calling for their explanations,” Party General Secretary Akila Viraj Kariyawasam said, issuing a press release.

Several UNP members had obtained nominations from other political parties without first obtaining prior approval from the Working Committee in line with Article 3.4(c) of the party Constitution.

The conduct of some members who have done so had compelled UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe to act in terms of Article 3.4(h) of the party Constitution in order to protect and safeguard the best interest of the Party, Kariyawasam explained. However, he notes that some members have expressed regret for seeking nominations through other political parties.

Nevertheless, the UNP has sent out letters to all members who have placed their names on the nomination lists of other political parties calling for their explanations.

“Any explanation which will be forthcoming from the Members will be placed before the Working Committee of the UNP at its next meeting for appropriate action,” Kariyawasam added.
