The United National Party (UNP) is set to discuss appointing Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order with President Maithripala Sirisena at the Cabinet meeting today.
“A resolution was brought by Kavinda Jayawardana and seconded by Hector Appuhamy to appoint Field Marshal Sarath Fonseka as the Minister of Law and Order,” Minister Lakshman Kiriella told Daily FT.
The move by the UNP Government Group meetings comes in the wake of fresh accusations made on lack of action taken by the defence and security establishment to prevent the Easter Sunday bombings despite receiving warnings.
Sirisena was opposed to any suggestion to give Fonseka a ministry, leaving him out of the Cabinet and non-Cabinet appointments made after the political crisis last year.
“We have been told that President has relented to the idea a bit,” Kiriella said.
The group is set to discuss the matter in detail during the Cabinet meeting, the second after the tragedy which killed more than 250. The matter was broached by several ministers during the last Cabinet meeting Kiriella said, but the proposal will be discussed by the entire Cabinet today.
During the meeting the security situation was discussed in detail, where the MPs were asked to be responsible for the security of the districts they represent.
