The United National Party (UNP) yesterday called on the Government to expedite decision making regarding the controversial policy not to allow the remains of those who have died from COVID-19 be buried.
Issuing a press release, UNP Deputy Leader Ruwan Wijewardene said that the sensitive issue regarding the last rights of the deceased has become a national issue, and is rapidly becoming internationalised due to inaction by the Government.
“Failure to act quickly regarding such a sensitive matter that affects the individual rights of citizens leads to it rapidly becoming a national and international issue. This issue will paint a negative image of Sri Lanka internationally and only aid those who want to portray the country in a negative way,” Wijewardene warned. Wijewardena also wrote to the Venerable chief monks of the three chapters, explaining the UNP’s stance on the issue.
The deputy leader of the UNP warned the Government, that failure to take prompt action on the matter could lead to erosion of good will between communities in Sri Lanka. “This is a very sensitive issue; the Government should consult all communities and religious leaders and take action soon based on a consensus,” Wijewardene said.
Wijewardene pointed out that the existing regulations that COVID-19 infected remains should be cremated affects not only the Muslim community but also Catholics and some Buddhists who opt to bury the remains of their dead. “We must accept the final rights of such persons,” Wijewardene said.
He also called on the Government to follow guidelines set by the World Health Organisation (WHO) and observe the practices of other countries in how they have effectively dealt with similar matters.
