Vidullanka PLC this week announced the official commissioning of the Vavunathivu Solar Power plant by the joint venture company; Solar Universe Ltd.
The ground mounted solar power project with 10 MWac is developed with a total investment of Rs. 2.4 billion, ceremonially connected to the national grid by Power and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera. The project is an outcome of a joint venture undertaken by Vidullanka PLC, Windforce PLC and HiEnergy Services Ltd.
The completion of the 10 MW project with estimated annual output over 20 million units comes at the critical juncture, where the country is burdened with high-cost thermal power generated electricity and prolonged power cuts. The renewable energy generated from the power plant will help the CEB replace the high-cost thermal power and help the country advance one step ahead in terms of energy security and self-reliance.
Amidst the weakening of the Sri Lankan economy and depreciation of the rupee, the development of the project faced much hardship in terms of exponential cost overruns and timing delays. The perseverance of all the partners involved was a key factor the helped the project overcome these adversities and reach a successful conclusion.
Vidullanka said it continues its growth endeavours and has committed to its diversification goals with the commissioning of this solar project. This will be the second Ground Mounted Solar Project under the Vidul Group and a very first solar project to be developed through the three-way joint venture. The increased presence in the Solar power space solidifies the position of Vidullanka as the company focusing on growth by capacity addition in Sri Lanka and overseas.
