Persons can now register for the COVID-19 vaccination program via the official website of the State Ministry of Primary Health Care, Epidemics and COVID Disease Control, which was launched yesterday.
The website gives the public access to information on the vaccine as well as COVID-19 and other projects carried out by the State Ministry. Speaking at the launch, Production, Supply and Regulation of Pharmaceuticals State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana, said applications have been submitted for the approval of three COVID-19 vaccines for use in Sri Lanka.
“We have received a minimum of three applications for vaccines and once the clinical reports are properly received, the committees will look into if they are suitable for the country and its people and approve them in the coming weeks,” Prof. Jayasumana said.
He explained that there were several inquiries being made into why only one COVID-19 vaccine has been approved for use in the country, but that a strong regulatory mechanism currently prevents overnight or quick approvals as soon as an application is submitted.
The State Minister assured that a decision will be made without delay if there is a need to bring these vaccines down to the country.
