ADB Chief in town

The President of the Asian Development Bank (ADB), Takehiko Nakao, will be making a three-day visit to Sri Lanka from 17-19 June. Today, 17 June, he will give a speech at the Academy of Financial Studies and, later in the day, meet with Government and Central Bank officials and development partners. Tomorrow, 18 June, he will meet with President Mahinda Rajapaksa at the President’s office and visit the Colombo Port, which has been expanded under a recently-completed ADB project. On 19 June, he will visit the Habarana Maha Vidyalaya, a school that received ADB funds under the Education for Knowledge Society Project to upgrade its physical infrastructure. Sri Lanka joined ADB as a founding member in 1966. As of 31 December 2013, ADB has approved a total of 176 in government and non-government loans totalling $6.17 billion. In addition, ADB has provided $ 358 million in grant assistance (including ADB-administered, co-financed grants) for projects, and $122.8 million in 259 technical assistance grants.
