The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has narrowed its choice for the permanent Director General following what was speculated to have been a two-horse in-house race.
The Commissioners at their meeting on Tuesday had their final independent assessment on the two short-listed candidates and picked one for recommendation to the Minister of Policy Planning and Economic Affairs, who is the appointing authority.
The Daily FT learns that incumbent Officer-in-Charge and Deputy Director General Dhammika Perera and Director – Capital Market Development Vajira Wijegunawardene were shortlisted for the final round.
The outcome follows SEC last month advertising the permanent DG post, which has been vacant for over three years. Around 10 interested parties had applied and those who were shortlisted faced several rounds of interviews.
The interim Government has vowed to ensure improved regulation of the capital market and the DG appointment is seen as the first important step.
