Japan’s Special Peace Envoy to Sri Lanka Yashushi Akashi, who played a significant role during the 2002-2004 peace talks, will arrive in Sri Lanka next week for talks with key Government officials here. The Government of Japan will dispatch Akashi, its Representative for Peace Building, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction in Sri Lanka, from 8-13 December after the successful conclusion of the first Northern Provincial Council election that Japan has welcomed as a significant step forward in the national reconciliation process. Akashi will meet with President Mahinda Rajapaksa, Minister of External Affairs G.L. Peiris and other Government officials and Opposition representatives during his visit. During his meetings with Government officials and others Akashi will emphasise the importance of continued efforts for national reconciliation toward the establishment of lasting peace. It will be Aksahi’s 23rd visit to Sri Lanka since he first assumed his role in 2002.
