Anti-dumping legislation promised before year-end

The long called for anti-dumping legislation will be tabled in Parliament and come into operation before the end of the year, assured Executive Director Institute of Policy Studies and Chairman-designate of the Agency for International Trade Dr. Saman Kelegama, while speaking at a seminar on Monday.

“The legislation will come very soon; it can be next month or maybe in November. It has gone through the necessary processes,” noted Dr. Kelegama, adding that it had been sent to the World Trade Organisation for vetting to ensure that it was compatible with their policies.

“This will give a lot of assurance to some of the import substitution industrialists that flooding the market with cheap goods will not happen in Sri Lanka.” 

Dr. Kelegama added that this was especially necessary in the context of the bilateral FTAs with China and Singapore coming into operation in the near future, and assured such safeguards would be enacted before any agreements came into effect.
