Parliamentarian and Opposition strongman Anura Kumara Dissanayake has been appointed Leader of the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP). Dissanayake’s appointment was unanimously approved at the Party’s 7th Annual Convention that was held at Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium yesterday. Dissanayake succeeds JVP veteran Somawansa Amarasinghe as Leader of the Marxist party. Amarasinghe proposed Dissanayake’s name for the leadership during the convention yesterday and it was unanimously approved by the JVP membership. Dissanayake has been a vociferous and articulate Government critic and has led the party exceedingly well in Parliamentary debate. (DB)
