BOC GM Gunasekera removed

Highly qualified and senior banker Bank of Ceylon (BoC) General Manager D.M.Gunasekera has been suspended with immediate effect. Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayke said the suspension has been carried out on many grounds including misuse of power and corruptions. It is learnt that in 2011, Bank of Ceylon opened up a branch in Seychelles-a country considered as one of the fastest growing tax havens in the world-during the time of the previous regime, without the permission of the Bank of Ceylon. Gunasekera was appointed as the General Manager in January 2013. Prior to that he held the position of Deputy General Manager, in charge of Retail Banking and Sales & Channel Management from October 2010 to January 2013. Holding BSc.Special(Public Finance & Taxation), AIB(Sri Lanka), AMP 63(Wharton USA), Gunasekera joined the BOC in 1983, He commenced his career in retail banking, which enriched him with a wealth of knowledge and experience in all aspects of credit management and administration. He served at BOC London branch from 1997 to 2000 and during his tenure in the UK, he received comprehensive experience in international banking operations. He counts for 31 years of experience in banking sector including Corporate and Off-shore banking. He was holding Board positions in several companies which are BOC subsidiaries as well as organisations such as the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka, Lanka Financial Services (Bureau) Ltd., LankaClear Ltd., Sri Lanka Banks’ Association (Guarantee) Ltd., The Financial Ombudsman Sri Lanka (Guarantee) Ltd. and a Member of the Governing Board of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka. He has successfully completed the program on Corporate Management for Sri Lanka (LKCM2 AOTS) in Japan an Advanced Management Program conducted by the Wharton University of Pennsylvania, USA. Gunasekara graduated from the University of Colombo, Sri Lanka, with a Special Degree in Public Finance & Taxation in 1981. He is an Associate Member of the Institute of Bankers of Sri Lanka and a Member of the Association of Professional Bankers.
