A loaf of bread will now be increased by Rs.2, stated the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association, President, N.K. Jayawardena, adding that a loaf of bread would weight 450 grammes.

This price increase comes after both Serendib Flour Mills (Pvt) Ltd. and Prima Flour Company increased the price of their wheat flour by Rs. 4.12 and Rs. 4.10 respectively earlier this week. The Consumer Affairs Authority, Chairman, Rumy Marzook told the Daily FT that they were contemplating legal action against both these flour companies and that instructions had been given to the Legal Department of the CAA to pursue the matter. According to Marzook, bread prices do not come under the purview of the CAA.

Meanwhile Serendib Flour Mills (Pvt) Ltd, CEO, Sathak Abdul Kadar said that Serendib was still awaiting some communication from the CAA or the Ministry of Internal Trade and Co- operatives regarding the legal action to be taken against them.

“Most probably by Monday or Tuesday we hope to have discussions with the Ministry regarding the flour issue,” he said.

Currently Serendib Flour Mills (Pvt) Ltd. sells flour at the new price and supplies flour only to wholesale merchants.
