Cabinet has approved the bill for witness protection in Sri Lanka. It has been sent to the Government Printer for publication in Sinhala, English and Tami, the Justice Ministry stated. As there was a need for a witness protection, the act was drafted by the Justice Ministry. It was then refereed to the Cabinet Sub-Committee on Legislation for its recommendations before being presented to Parliament. The Act for Protection of Witnesses in Sri Lanka will create a balance in the criminal justice system of Sri Lanka between the rights of the accused, the rights and entitlements of victims of crime and the entitlements of witnesses, and will thereby facilitate the conduct of fair trials and justice being meted out to both victims of crime and the accused. The Justice Ministry said the gazette would be published shortly.
