Cabinet this week approved a proposal to prepare “suitable strategies for digitalising the economy and to implement the proposed project” to develop the digital economy of Sri Lanka.
According to Cabinet Co-spokesperson Gayantha Karunathilaka, the considerable growth in the digital field was insufficient to develop the digital economy of Sri Lanka.
Taking forward the Government’s policy to establish a dynamic digital economy, the project aims to develop strategies, expand the digital economy and empower citizens to reap the benefits of the developments.
Measures to digitalise the Government administration are already under way. However, it was observed that the growth in the field over the past year was insufficient to develop the digital economy in the country.
Observing the importance in driving the growth, the proposal jointly submitted by the Minister of Telecommunication and Digital Infrastructure Harin Fernando and Development Strategies and International Trade Minister Malik Samarawickrama, to prepare a strategy to improve the situation, was approved by the Government, Karunathilaka said.
