No traditional address by the BASL President

The new appointee to the position of Chief Justice, Mohan Peiris, will be welcomed at Ceremonial Sitting at the Supreme Court today, despite what will be the marked absence of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka President and its prominent membership.

Peiris, who took oaths as Chief Justice before President Mahinda Rajapaksa on 15 January, succeeds impeached Chief Justice Shirani Bandaranayake.

The Ceremonial Sitting traditionally includes an address each from the President of the Bar Association and the Attorney General. However, the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, standing by its resolution adopted last month, will not attend the ceremonial sitting tomorrow. In place of the address by the BASL President, the Government is making arrangements to have a senior lawyer present the address.

The sitting is expected to be well attended by officials from the AG’s Department and lawyers affiliated to the Government who supported the impeachment of Chief Justice Bandaranayake.
