Former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga yesterday expressed confidence in the common Opposition winning the presidential elections next month.
Speaking at an event at Crow Island in Colombo to mark the 10th anniversary of the Asian tsunami, Kumaratunga said that the unity among several political parties which were backing Maithripala Sirisena for President guaranteed they could win.
Kumaratunga recalled that soon after the 2004 tsunami, political parties had united for one cause and this ensured the country recovered from the disaster within a short period of time.
She noted that a similar unity could now be seen with those backing Sirisena and she was confident with that backing he would win the 8 January election.
Kumaratunga, who was President when the tsunami struck Sri Lanka, recalled the controversy over the ‘Helping Hambantota’ fund and noted that former Chief Justice Sarath N. Silva had also admitted he made a mistake in giving a ruling in favour of the fund.
