Chief Prelates call for a free and fair election

The Chief Prelates of the main Buddhist chapters have requested Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to ensure a free and fair election for the international community to honour the country after the election. In a letter addressed to the Elections Commissioner, the Maha Nayaka of Asgiri Chapter Venerable Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera and the Maha Nayaka of the Malwathu Chapter of Shyaamopaali Maha Nikaaya Venerable Thibbatuwawe Sri Siddhartha Thera have said that the ancient times it has been the responsibility of the Maha Sangha to guide the people of this country to live in unity, peace and coexistence. The Chief Prelates, noting the election violence taking place in the country, have requested the Elections Commissioner to implement the law on everyone equally and facilitate a peaceful environment for people to cast their votes freely.
