Corruption in Govt. on the rise : Ranil

Leader of the main opposition United National Party (UNP) Ranil Wickremesinghe has said that the existing Government’s corruption has even been highlighted by China, which provides the highest number of loans to Sri Lanka. Addressing a seminar on the 2014 Budget at the Jathika Sevaka Sangama Headquarters, Wickremes-inghe said that a Chinese national newspaper had highlighted that corruption in Sri Lanka, Malawi and Morocco Government sectors was on the rise. He noted that the level of corruption in the Government has reached great heights that even commissions appointed end up as means of collecting financial commissions. According to Wickremesinghe, the Government that claims not having adequate funds to provide relief to the people had however spent billions to construct an airport in Mattala and a cricket stadium in Suriyawewa. The UNP Leader has pointed out that it is the actions of the Government that has resulted in the national debt at Rs. 1.8 trillion in 2005 increasing to Rs. 6.6 trillion under the current Government. “This shows that Rs. 4.8 trillion had been additionally spent during only eight years,” Wickremesinghe has said, adding that the increased amount was a result of corruption.
