Nationwide poll reveals that the people continue to be overwhelmingly concerned about rising cost of living
Business magazine LMD reports, in its March 2014 issue, that “when asked whether the cost of living in present-day Sri Lanka is reasonable, the vast majority (88%) claim that it is not the case”. This conclusion emanates from the LMD-TNS Talking Point, a monthly nationwide survey that addresses burning issues facing the people.
On the other hand, more than a third of the respondents say official inflation data does, in fact, accurately reflect the cost of living.
“However, 70% of those polled argue that salary hikes are not keeping pace with the rate of inflation and eight-in-10 claim that the electricity tariffs currently in place cannot be deemed reasonable,” LMD notes.
The magazine adds that “at the same time, a mere 4% of the people find the cost of fuel to be manageable and reasonable. Conversely, a whopping 82% of respondents say fuel costs are a burden to bear, while a further 14% remain ‘unsure.’” LMD’s March issue features Unilever Sri Lanka’s first woman Chairperson, Shazia Syed, on its cover (you can read the full story on LMD’s website – www.LMD.lk).
