Court issues probate of Dr. Gamani Corea’s estate to Suganthie Kadirgamar

The District Court of Colombo has recently issued probate to Suganthie Wijayasuriya Kadirgamar in respect of the estate of the late Dr. Gamani Corea, well- known economist, one time Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) and Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations. Avindra Rodrigo appeared with Nimesha de Silva on the instructions of Ananda Tikiriratne, on behalf of Kadirgamar. The probate was issued on 7 July. Kadirgamar was previously issued Temporary Letters of Administration as Administrator pendente lite for the administration and management of the estate of the late Dr. Gamani Corea, exceeding Rs. 1.5 billion in value, which includes land in Colombo and Nuwara Eliya together with several investments in local and foreign currency, fixed deposits and several other liquid assets. The estate also includes property in Geneva, Switzerland. The late Dr. Gamani Corea passed away on 3 November 2013, leaving behind a Last Will appointing Kadirgamar as the Executrix thereof and the Gamani Corea Foundation as the beneficiary of his estate. Dr. Corea was also Ceylon’s Ambassador to the European Economic Community, Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and Economic Affairs of Ceylon and the Senior Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Ceylon.
