The UNP says that although the President had announced the import of 20,000 high quality cows to increase the country’s milk production, in fact there was no budgetary allocation for the move.
Each cow would cost an estimated Rs. 850,000, UNP MP Harsha De Silva told a news conference yesterday. “Not a cent has been allocated for this purpose next year, but when the President made the announcement, there was much table-thumping and applause in the Government ranks,” he said.
Similarly the incentive of Rs. 10,000 for Divi Neguma families had been promised in the Budget unveiled on Thursday but the allocation to pay the incentive of Rs. 710 million had not been made, he explained.
