By Shabiya Ali Ahlam Sri Lanka has taken the lead in the South Asia region once again by becoming the first to offer people the facility of accessing credit information online. To allow individuals to assess their credit history and manage their future borrowings with just a click, the Credit Information Bureau of Sri Lanka (CRIB) made the available ‘iReport’ facility online from last week. This unique initiative was officially launched on Friday at the third CRIB annual symposium featuring Central Bank of Sri Lanka Deputy Governor/CRIB Chairman Ananda Silva as Chief Guest, and Compuscan Credit Bureau Uganda Managing Director Mike Malon as the speaker to facilitate the technical session. While previously iReports were issued only through banks or the bureau, any individual can now do the same by initially registering at the CRIB office in person and obtaining a user ID and password. Access will be granted once the payment for the facility is made via credit card through a nominated gateway. As one of the key responsibilities of the CRIB is to mandate and discipline burrowers, the institution shared that it is in the midst of formulating plans to encourage the public to use this facility regularly. “We will be excessively promoting the online iReport next year to increase the awareness of this platform. To encourage increase usage, by 2014 we hope to make this facility free for the public,” said Silva. He assured strict measure have been taken by the CRIB to ensure that the credit information available online remain secure.
