The Customs Department yesterday seized over 16,000 litres of ethanol imported into the country illegally.
A spokesman at the department said that the consignment had been imported from Malaysia and was to be smuggled into the country.
The container with the ethanol consignment was checked at the Orugodawatte yard and the items were seized.
