Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has sought clarification from the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights at the UN over her alleged opposition to the statue of Sri Lanka’s first Prime Minister D.S. Senanayake at Independence Square. In a letter to UN High Commissioner Navi Pillay, Wickremesinghe refers to her remarks as relayed to a weekend Sinhala newspaper by Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The Defence Secretary noted that Pillay had opposed Senanayake’s statue being positioned at Independence Square. Wickremesinghe said that Prime Minister Senanayake was considered the ‘Father of the Nation’. Attaching the relevant newspaper article, Wickremesinghe asked the UN High Commissioner to clarify her remarks.
