Young journalist also wins prestigious Columnist of the Year
Daily FT’s Shabiya only English business journalist to be recognised at 2013 edition of Excellence Awards of Editors Guild and Sri Lanka Press Institute
Proving its prowess, the Daily FT last night bagged three awards including the coveted Mervyn de Silva Journalist of the Year and B.A. Siriwardena Columnist of the Year – English, both won by Dharisha Bastians, the paper’s Political Columnist.
The Daily FT’s newcomer Shabiya Ali Ahlam was also the only English business journalist to be recognised with a Merit Award at the 2013 edition of annual Excellence Awards organised by The Editor’s Guild of Sri Lanka and the Sri Lanka Press Institute.
At the 15th edition of the annual awards, Daily FT sister papers Daily Mirror and The Sunday Times also bagged several awards, making Wijeya Newspapers Ltd. the most awarded print media group.
The Sunday Times won the Denzil Peiris Young Reporter of the Year Award (Aanya Wipulasena), Best Designed Newspaper of the Year Award, Investigative Journalist of the Year Award (won by the News Desk), Subramanian Chettiar Social Development Reporter of the Year Merit Award (Chathuri Dissanayake and Award for Earning Appreciation of Peers and Public (Kishali Pinto-Jayawardena).
Daily Mirror’s Sports Editor Channaka de Silva won the Sports Journalist of the Year Award; Deputy News Features Editor Lakna Paranamanna won the Subramanian Chettiar Social Development Reporter of the Year Award and Cartoonist Awantha Artigala won the Cartoonist of the Year award.
