Cabinet approval was given yesterday for the Immigration and Emigration Department to start an archive applications received by Sri Lankans living overseas seeking dual citizenship and other services.
Cabinet Spokesman Minister Keheliya Rambukwella noted that the facility was needed since the end of the war had resulted in a huge influx of requests from locals. The database will also store applications for registering of children born overseas to Sri Lankan parents and applications asking for visa.
The electronic document archive will be used to check and facilitate requests in the future, the Minister assured.
“The database will strengthen the visa and citizenship issuance process and upgrade the record management system. The proposal was presented to Cabinet by President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the Minister of Defence and Urban and Development. We have noticed that since the end of the war a lot of Sri Lankans living overseas from the north and east wish to obtain services or want to return,” he added. (UJ)
