Ranil calls for Yingluck Shinawatra’s release
With the declaration of Martial Law in a bid to restore order in Thailand that has been without a functioning government, Leader of the Opposition Ranil Wickremesinghe yesterday called for the release of Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra, now in military detention.
Making a special statement in Parliament, Wickremesinghe stated that Yingluck was a State guest and the two countries shared similarities which were undebatable.
“On 31 May last year then Prime Minister of Thailand Yingluck Shinawatra addressed this House. The Leader of the House and I both got up and thanked her.
According to what has happened recently, after winning the election not only she is being debarred from contesting, now her Government has also been removed. A military government has come and she is being detained inside a military facility,” said Wickremesinghe.
“Now as the persons of this House who invited her come and address this House, we have all the rights to ask that she be released. After all, this is a family which has come to this country to ensure the Higher Ordination Ceremony between Thailand and Sri Lanka being observed. We should insist that she be released and the interim Government put back for free and fair elections. You can’t have people coming in and taking over governments and throwing people away. She commands both the respect of Government and the Opposition of this House. I would get up and say that we have all the right to say that she be released,” he added. (AH)
