The Employers’ Federation of Ceylon is urging the Government to grant a five-day work week option to all industries in the export manufacturing sector. EFC Director General Ravi Peiris in a letter addressed to the Commissioner General of Labour has stated that the facility of opting to operate a five-day week, subject to the condition that both the employer and the workers are in agreement, should be extended to the entire manufacturing sector in the export industry. He said that it is not a facility which should be limited to the apparel industry, and especially at a time when electricity tariffs have increased and the companies in these sectors are looking at being more cost effective, this is a facility that should be afforded to them. The letter also referred to the fact that the National Labour Advisory Council had granted this facility and given the Commissioner General of Labour the authority to grant administrative relaxation on a case by case basis to all companies in the export industry until January 2014.
