A committee appointed to probe the incident of an unmanned train engine travelling about 12 kilometres through the city found that the shunting driver and his assistant were negligent in the incident.
The committee submitted its report to the Transport Minister Kumara Welgama at the Ministry yesterday. According to the Committee, the shunting driver and assistant were at fault.
The runaway train engine, which was docked at the Railway Yard in Dematagoda has started automatically in the pre-dawn hours of 5 December and proceeded without a driver on the southern railway track.
However, the train engine was stopped in between Ratmalana and Mount Lavinia. No one was hurt in the incident.
Following the incident railway authorities suspended the driver and the assistant of the runaway engine with immediate effect and appointed a three-member technical team to probe the incident and ascertain how the engine proceeded such a distance.
