Extending the debate on the controversial Standard and Poor’s report, UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday pledged to continue demanding transparency on Employment Provident Fund (EPF) transactions.
He pointed out that in the subsequent clarification Standard and Poor’s had not detracted even a word of its previous statement. He recalled that when specific information of the EPF’s purchase pattern regarding stock investment was requested, the document tabled by Senior Minister Dr. Sarath Amunugama did not contain any of the details requested.
“We asked for the date, amount, price and reason for the stock purchases made by the EPF but the document that was submitted did not contain any of these details. I don’t know under what law the Ministers and officials are withholding information from Parliament.”
He also questioned how instances of conflict of interest could be found regarding the EPF when its accounts were not edited on time. He recalled that the 2010 accounts were presented in mid-2012 and that the EPF had not been before Parliament in six years.
