Estate workers want salary hike

A trade union affiliated to Sri Lanka’s estate sector has called for a salary increase for estate employees.a Head of the All Ceylon Estate Workers’ Union, Ramalingam Chandrasekar said the union has requested for an increase in the salaries of estate workers during a meeting with Labour Minister Gamini Lokuge. He said the Union has explained to the Minister at the meeting attended by several estate sector trade unions that the estate employees in the private sector received a basic salary of Rs. 380 per day and that it has not been increased despite the collective agreement reached between trade unions and employers. According to Chandrasekar, the salary increase that has been promised to the estate employees should be implemented immediately. The estate sector trade unions have requested the Minister to convene an urgent discussion between the Estate Employers’ Federation and the Salaries Commission.
