Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne yesterday suspended the national passport and diplomatic passport of former Sri Lankan Ambassador to Russia Udayanga Weeratunge over alleged financial fraud committed by him during time in office.

Fort Magistrate Lanka Jayaratne ordered it after considering the request made by the FCID.

The FCID stated that Weeratunge, who was wanted by the FCID for alleged financial fraud committed by him while serving as the Sri Lanka Ambassador in Russia, is travelling from country to country using two passports.

The national passport and diplomatic passport were issued by the Sri Lankan Government.

The Police said he was made a suspect over alleged fraud involving the purchase of a MiG-27 fighter jet and for several other actions.

The Sri Lankan authorities issued an Interpol arrest warrant against him.

The Fort Magistrate earlier froze 16 local bank accounts belonging to him.
