Gayoom’s daughter appointed Minister under new Maldives Govt.

Maldives new President Dr. Mohamed Waheed yesterday appointed Dhunya Maumoon as Minister of State for Foreign Affairs.

Dhunya is the daughter of Maldives former President Maumoon Gayoom.

Waheed also appointed two more Minsters  –Sheikh Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed as the Minister of Islamic Affairs and Dr Mohamed Muiz as the Minister of Housing and Environment.



The new appointments came a day after President Waheed met with leaders of political parties to carry forward the consultations and consensus building process he had initiated to bring about his Vision of a Democratic Maldives, based on the draft document titled Roadmap for a Possible Way Forward.

“Invitation was again extended to the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) to participate in this all-party Consultative Meeting. The MDP regretfully opted not to attend,” a statement  from the President’s Office stated.

At this meeting which was held at the President’s Office, discussions focused primarily on achieving the aims and objectives outlined in the Draft Roadmap. All the political parties agreed to the appointment of former Minister of Tourism, Ahmed Mujthaba as Convener, to moderate the discussions.

The parties reiterated their hope that the MDP would engage in future consultative and consensus building dialogues aimed at achieving the loadable objectives of the visionary Roadmap. In the meantime, the President would communicate with President of MDP, Dr Ibrahim Didi as to whether his party agrees to Ahmed Mujthaba’s appointment as the Convener, the statement added.
