Government presents 67 supplementary estimates to Parliament

Portraying an excess of expenses and changes, the Government yesterday presented 67 supplementary estimates amounting to billions of rupees to Parliament for approval.

The supplementary estimates have been allocated between 10 and 30 June 2011 from the Budgetary Support Services and Contingency Liabilities Project of the Department of National Budget.

According to a paper presented to Parliament, a supplementary estimate has been submitted on behalf of the Department of Motor Traffic for approval of Rs. 1.1 billion for printing of vehicle number plates from May to December 2011.

Other supplementary estimates include Rs. 23.3 million for building rent for the Secretariat for Senior Ministers, Rs. 97.9 million for purchase of computers, training of teachers and capacity building under the Education Sector Development Project under the Ministry of Education and over Rs. 40 million to the Ministry of External Affairs in relation to the reopening of the Sri Lanka Embassy in Baghdad.

Millions of rupees have also been allocated for the purchase of vehicles as well.  

The estimates for purchasing vehicles include Rs. 6.2 million for a vehicle for the Ministry of Child Development and Women’s Affairs, Rs. 5.2 million for a vehicle for the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery and Corruption, Rs. 4.8 million for a vehicle for the Prime Minister’s office and Rs. 16 million allocated to purchase vehicles for Sri Lanka embassies in Seoul, Mumbai, Qatar and the Philippines.
