The Government hailed the outcome of the vote at the UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) yesterday, saying the efforts of the Government in Geneva were reflected in the results of the vote. An SMS alert by the Government Information Department noted that by managing to convince 24 countries to either vote against or abstain from voting for the resolution, the Government efforts in Geneva were successful. In all, 23 countries of the 47-member Council voted for the resolution while of the remaining 24 countries, 12 voted against and 12 abstained. Meanwhile, President Mahinda Rajapaksa rejected the UN Human Rights Council resolution ordering a war crimes probe, telling AFP that he would instead press ahead with his own reconciliation plan. “We reject this,” Rajapaksa said. “This resolution only hurts our reconciliation efforts. It does not help. “But I am not discouraged. We will continue with the reconciliation process I have started,” he added in a phone call to AFP. (Colombo Gazette)
