The Government has decided to increase the levy on imported milk powder to protect the local dairy industry as the global prices of milk powder had dropped.
The import duty on milk powder has been increased by Rs. 25 per kilogram with effect from Monday (2), the Ministry of Finance and Planning said.
Accordingly the previous import duty of Rs. 57 has been increased to Rs. 82 per kilogram.
The hike comes despite the Government’s ally National Freedom Front of Minister Wimal Weerawansa urging the Government to reduce milk powder prices.
NFF Spokesman Mohamed Muzzammil told the media on Monday that milk powder prices have dipped from $ 5,000 to $ 3,700 per ton and the Government should take action to reduce milk power prices in the market.
