Govt. raises levy on imported potatoes

The Government has raised taxes levied on imported potatoes by Rs. 15 per kilo with effect from midnight Thursday, the Finance and Planning Ministry said. The Ministry said the Government has decided to revise special commodity levy on imported potatoes in order to ensure a reasonable price for local farmers who are engaged in potato cultivation and stabilise prices in the market. Accordingly, special commodity levy charged per kilo of imported potatoes has been increased from Rs. 10 to Rs. 25. Harvest of the Yala season potato cultivation is being received to the market from last month. Country’s potato harvest is expected to reach 150,000 metric tons this season. According to the Ministry, the farmers will be able to sell one kilogram of potatoes at Rs. 75 to 80.
