Rs. 37.8 m spent to maintain 23 dubious Presidential Coordinating Secys.By Ashwin Hemmathagama Our Lobby Correspondent The Government has spent Rs. 37.8 million over the past three years to maintain 23 coordinating secretaries of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, whose educational qualifications and expertise do not necessarily complement the roles they play, it was revealed in Parliament yesterday. Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunewardane told Parliament that although there was provision for the President to appoint 25 coordinating secretaries, 23 had already been appointed to look into various areas Minister Gunewardane was responding to a question for oral answer raised by JVP Leader and MP Anura Kumara Dissanayake. “Minister Sajin Vass Gunewardane is the External Affairs Coordinating Secretary. Administrative and establishment areas are looked after by Daya Gallage and Kumarasiri Hettige. Coordinating Secretaries for Economic, Political and Trade Union Affairs are Wadiwel Suresh, Sumith Wijesinghe, Kithsiri Ganganath Abeygunawardena, Kithsiri Sepala and Athula Wijesinghe. Educational, Social and Ethnic Affairs Coordinating Secretaries are Mohomed Fersan Mansoor, Wasantha Gunasekara, Dhammika Withanage, W.M.N.B. Galketiya and W.P. Gamini Wijesinghe. Arts and Cultural Affairs Coordinating Secretaries are Neil Weeratunga, Rohan Weliwita, Wanshanath Wijesinghe and Akshin Punchihewa. Religious Affairs were coordinated by Ven. Watinapaha Somananda Thero, Ven. Getamanne Gunanada Thero, Vernon Samarakoon and A.M. Rathnayake. Legal and Defence Coordinating Secretaries are Sampath Tennakoon and K.P.P. Pathirana,” said Minister Gunewardane. In response to a supplementary question seeking clarifications about the qualifications of coordinating secretaries in question, Minister Gunewardane acknowledged that while all coordinating secretaries had to be educated above Ordinary Level, some held degrees in diverse fields although they were “not appointed for the correct areas of expertise”. “They receive a monthly salary of Rs. 30,000, a mobile phone allowance of Rs. 5,000, a transport allowance of Rs. 30,000 and 170 litres of petrol,” Minister Gunewardane said. |
