Govt. to invest $ 140 m to reconstruct A5 road from Badulla to Chenkaladi

The Government will reconstruct the 151.3 km of the A5 main road from Badulla to Chenkaladi at an estimated cost of $ 140 million.
The A5 road from Peradeniya via Badulla to Chenkaladi is one of the major highways linking the Eastern Province to the Central Province.
The section from Peradeniya to Badulla has been rebuilt and the remaining 151.3 km section to Chenkaladi is proposed to be rebuilt in the next phase.
The project is to be jointly funded by the OPEC Fund for International Development (OFID) and the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) with the balance contribution being made by the Sri Lankan Government.
The Cabinet of Ministers has approved a proposal by President Mahinda Rajapaksa in his capacity as the Minister of Finance and is planning to enter into a loan agreement with the OPEC Fund for International Development for the project, the Cabinet said in a statement.
