Harsha fires salvo against CB reference to “economic hitmen”

UNP MP and the party’s Economic Affairs Spokesperson Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday hit back at the Central Bank’s reference to economic hitmen in apparent reference to the main Opposition in its recent public notice on issues concerning finance companies.
Following is the statement issued by UNP MP de Silva:
The UNP finds the accusations levelled against unnamed politicians in the recent public notice issued by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) on the crisis in some registered finance companies not in keeping with the high level of professionalism expected from the financial market regulator.
We are appalled by the statement issued by the CBSL and published in all mainstream newspapers at public cost that ‘politically motivated economic hitmen’ are resorting to ‘unsavoury practices’ to destabilise the financial market by attempting to ‘frighten the public,’ even amateurishly resorting to the use of exclamation marks in its wild accusation.
We wish to note that as a responsible Opposition, the UNP has taken utmost care in dealing with this serious issue and has been extra cautious in balancing both sides of the scale and has at no point engaged in any of the acts that the CBSL has indirectly accused us of doing. We have acted and will continue to act responsibly in the best interest of all stakeholders.
We sincerely hope that the CBSL would deal with the reality facing tens of thousands of innocent depositors in a number of finance companies who have become technically bankrupt instead of attempting to blame others to cover up the serious regulatory lapses on their part.
