UNP MP Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday issued a fresh salvo over former Chairman of CEB Vidya Amarapala’s response over the latter’s name appearing among those holding secret accounts.
The following is the statement from Dr. de Silva:
While awaiting word from the authorities on what they intend to do with those who had violated the country’s laws in operating secret accounts in tax havens, I read with interest the reply published in your paper yesterday by Vidya Amarapala, former Chairman of the CEB, that my demand that he explain how his name ended up on the said list is defamatory.
I wish to reiterate that no one is interested as to who appointed him to the Board of the company that held the secret account or his job description in that company or how the CEB did during his tenor. The only question is as the Chairman of a public corporation, did Amarapala disclose this information in his annual filings as required by law?
Instead of beating around the bush, he should answer the simple question. After that, he can start providing answers to the many questions raised by the CEB Engineers’ Union regarding highly irregular deals during his tenor; particularly how the Aggreko contract was signed violating government tender guidelines and much more. We hope he will provide an answer to the real question.
