Harsha says UNP effective in bringing relief to people

UNP MP and party spokesman on the economy Dr. Harsha de Silva yesterday welcomed President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s decision to revise the CEB tariffs, a move which the former linked to the effectiveness of the Opposition.

“We are happy that our fight on behalf of the 2.4 million electricity-poor households has borne fruit. Those who criticised the UNP would now have to grudgingly admit that our well articulated, fact-based and logical argument that the tariff increase on the electricity poor must be removed had to be accepted by the government. This is yet another example of the effectiveness of the UNP as an opposition where we were able to force the government to once again reverse a decision that was taken arrogantly and defended until the inevitable had to be done, albeit in the Government’s now customary tragicomic way policy is made and reversed,” UNP MP Harsha de Silva said.
