The International Cricket Council (ICC) yesterday issued a fraud alert and caution notice to fans.

“It has been brought to the attention of the International Cricket Council (ICC) that certain individuals, purportedly representing the ICC, contact members of the public via e-mail announcing that they have won cash awards as part of ICC sweepstakes or other prize competitions,” a statement from the global cricket body said.

“Award ‘winners’ are most often instructed to provide personal details, including bank account information, and to wire funds to a third party bank account to facilitate the receipt of their award,” it added.

The ICC wishes to place on record that neither does the ICC conduct nor authorise any such sweepstakes or prize promotions nor does it appoint any third parties to do so. Further, the ICC will never ask you to send or confirm personal information via e-mail or to wire funds to a bank account for award eligibility.

If you do happen to receive an e-mail from someone purporting to be a representative of the ICC that asks you for this type of information, please do not respond to it. It is most likely a fraudulent e-mail the sole purpose of which is to elicit your personal information and your funds for illegal gain. To be safe and to avoid any future correspondence, the ICC also recommends you add the sender to your blocked e-mail or spam e-mail list.

“If you receive any communication of the nature described above, or experience any similar attempts to obtain bank account information or funds, the ICC suggests that you immediately notify your local law enforcement agency,” the ICC notice said.

Should you have any questions or require any clarifications with respect to matters of this nature, you may contact the ICC via e- mail at [email protected].
