Inspector General of Police N.K. Illangakoon has informed all the territorial Police stations to closely liaise with banks, financial institutions and other business enterprises in their respective Police jurisdictions to review and augment existing security measures in the respective establishments. This direction has been sent consequent to a meeting organised by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce on 25 April to brief its members on how to minimise risks to businesses by deciding on proper security measures to adopt. The IGP informed this latest move to the chamber in a letter he sent to the CCC. In the letter, which was addressed to Harin Malwatte, Secretary General of the Chamber, the IGP stated that the Police Headquarters offers its reassurances of the highest order to the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce and its membership in its assistance in this regard. The meeting organised by the chamber was addressed by the Deputy Inspector General of Police Ajith Wickramasekara, who explained what business entities should do towards minimising the potential security risks they might face. The meeting took place, under the title ‘Minimising Risks to Your Business by Deciding on Proper Security Measures,’ which was conducted at the chamber premises. Following the letter by the IGP, the Ceylon Chamber has also taken steps to inform all its members to make contact with the Officer-in-Charge of the Police station in the respective areas where the member firm is established. The move by the chamber and the Police to hold a seminar came following the spate of crimes which took place in the recent times, targeting business firms such as banks and financial institutions, etc.
