The Ministry of Finance yesterday announced that the import taxes on big onions and potatoes have been increased with immediate effect.
The Ministry said it has decided to amend the special commodity levy on imported potatoes and big onions to ensure a justifiable price for the products of local potatoes and big onion farmers as the potatoes and big onions harvest of this year’s Yala season is currently being received by the market.
Accordingly, the import tax on potatoes has been increased from Rs. 25 to Rs. 40 per kilogram while the tax on big onions has been increased from Rs. 30 to Rs. 35 per kilo.
