In historic move Modi to address Parliament today

Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to address the Sri Lankan Parliament today at 3.15 p.m. Modi is on a State visit to Sri Lanka from 13-14 March. He will be the fourth Indian Prime Minister to address the Members of Parliament. The last occasion was on 6 February 1979, 36 years ago, by Morarji Desai. The prior occasions were on 28 April 1973 by Indira Gandhi and on 13 October 1962 by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru. This is the first time an Indian Prime Minister will be accorded with the privilege of addressing the Parliamentarians assembled as a Parliament inside the Parliament Chamber at Sri Jayewardenepura Kotte with the Speaker of the House in the Chair and the Mace on the Table. On the previous three occasions, the Indian Leaders addressed the Parliamentarians in the Assembly Hall of the Parliament Building at Colombo but the Members of Parliament were not assembled as a Parliament. An Indian Prime Minister is making a State visit to Sri Lanka after 28 years and the last visit was by Rajiv Gandhi in July 1987. Manmohan Singh visited Parliament along with the SAARC Heads of States on 3 August 2008.
