The Government has decided to regulate international schools and bring them under a formal legal framework. A decision to this effect was made by Cabinet at its meeting on Wednesday. The Government said a number of international schools are presently functioning in the country and they have been registered as business ventures under the Board of Investment or Companies Act. It has been found necessary to bring in amendments to existing rules and regulations for the effective functioning of the international schools and private schools in keeping with the needs of the country. The proposal made by Minister of Education Bandula Gunawardena to proceed with the proposed arrangements for the formulation of a legal framework and a mechanism to regularise these schools to be in line with the national educational policies was approved by the Cabinet.
