JVP claims no party will clinch majority

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) yesterday said that no political party would be able to obtain a majority at the forthcoming election. 

JVP Propaganda Secretary Vijitha Herath asserted that neither the United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA) nor the United National Party (UNP) would obtain sufficient seats to form an independent Government. 

“We believe that any party that comes to power after the forthcoming election should opt to form a National Government. However, the JVP will not join hands with them to form such a Government,” Herath stressed.

He also said that the JVP would follow the same political agenda which it had followed during the last several years.

“We supported the UPFA as well as the UNP for national interest. Nevertheless, we never allowed our party to align with major political parties to form a coalition government. We will go forward independently,” Herath emphasised. 

He said that the UNP and UPFA had been trying to spread false information about the JVP’s manifesto, the ‘Accord of Conscience’.

“Opposing political parties, including the UNP and UPFA, have tried to spread false information about our manifesto as well as our candidates. 



They have used leaflets and Facebook accounts to do so. However, we believe the progressive people who have gathered around the JVP will never leave it,” Herath stated.

Speaking more about the propaganda levelled against the JVP, Herath claimed that someone had created a Facebook account masquerading as the official account of JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva, and spread false information through it.

“This fake Facebook account had posted a number of letters in it along with several false signatures. It mentioned that the JVP had gotten funds from foreign organisations to run election campaigns. We deny all those posts. We have been running our election bid through funds offered to us by the progressive people,” Herath noted.

He added that all the people who were disappointed in their political party had recognised the JVP as the best option.
