Kantale Sugar Factory reopened after 20 years

The Kantale Sugar Factory which had been shut down for 20 years was reopened on 4 December, benefiting around 25,000 farmer families. The initiative was taken under the ‘Mahinda Chinthana’ vision of soliciting a vital contribution to the national economy from the factories that have been shut down. The intention of the Ministry is to increase the annual production of the Sevanagala and Pelwatte sugar factories from the present 6% of consumption to 20% by 2020. The country’s annual expenditure incurred on the import of sugar requirement of the country is Rs. 550 million. The reopening of the sugar factories will help the country save valuable foreign exchange.
